A “sentence” is a word group that contains a subject and a verb and that expresses a complete thought. A sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period, a question mark, or an exclamation point. A “sentence fragment” is a word group that looks like a sentence but either does not contain both a subject and a verb or does not express a complete thought. A word group that has a subject and a verb and that expresses a complete thought is called an “independent clause.” An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence. A word group that has a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought (such as “As I walked to school yesterday”) is called a “subordinate clause.”
