My purpose in this paper is not to discuss the difference in slang between today’s young adults and adults from an older generation. Rather, I will attempt to analyze non-referential definites in a slang context (i.e., the use of ‘the’ in “the dank ass shit”). I will begin with a definition of slang and then consider why it should be studied.
